What are Placements?

A placement is an open banner slot on a publisher website where advertisers can (let Yieldr) serve their creatives with the matching specifications. For example, a 300x250 sized placement slot on www.monkeys.com offers advertising space for a 300x250 sized banner creative from an advertiser. The placement option in the Yieldr Ads platform is generally used by advertisers who wish to traffic a creative, which will be used for a direct deal media buy. 

When you create a new placement in Yieldr Ads, you select the size of creatives that can serve on the placement, set a price for your managed demand and configure a default / passback tag. We'll walk you through step by step in this article, but first please note that there is a certain hierarchy to using a new trafficked placement tag, in this case it's Publisher > Site > Placement. If you haven't yet created a publisher and/or a site, read more about how to do that in this article.

Create New Placement

Navigate to "Supply > Placements" in the left navigation menu, and click the green plus sign "+" on the top right to start creating your new placement. 

This will open up a new dialog box which prompts you to "Choose a Site".

When you've selected your (newly created) site, click the "Use this Site" button, and you'll be directed to the set up screen for your new placement.

Placement Settings

  • Name: Enter the name you wish to use for the placement. You will  be able to search for and report on this tracker using this name.
  • Pricing Type: From the dropdown you can choose either CPM, or RevShare which will require a percentage. Choose the right value depending on the deal you've made with the publisher.
  • CPM Price: This is the CPM price in your advertisers currency, which you will pay per 1000 impressions. This option is only available when you choose CPM as the pricing type.
  • Ad Size: Select the size of your placement. You can either choose a preset banner size, or set a custom size. 
  • Demand Filter: When creating a new placement, it is mandatory to use the demand filter, because a placement must be linked to either an advertiser, a line item or a tracker campaign. If you want your tracker to only run on one specific tracker campaign, make sure you create one before you create your newpPlacement.

Configure Default Tag

In order to prevent serving creative blanks, you can set up your own default back-up creative and assign it to your new placement. This should be a third-party URL or a tag, that sends the Impression to another ad server. This default creative will serve if there is no eligible creative that can clear the set price.

    When you default to a third-party ad server, you are still filling the impression and therefore will pay the publisher for this impression.

PI Responses

You can also add preliminary impressions (PI) responses to your placement, which are publisher side "Yes Bid" and "No Bid" pixels. They enable us to run on managed deals in a programmatic way. After filling out these details, check if the play button at the top right is highlighted green, and then press "Create" at the top left of your screen to save your placement. Then you can move on to exporting the tag so you can send it to your publisher(s) for inclusion on their pages.

Export your Placement

Navigate to the "Supply > Placement" section in the platform, and use the search bar to show your new placement. Hover over the three dots button next to the name of your placement, and select the "Generate AdTag" option.

In the "Placements" section, the placement for which you want to generate your AdTag should be pre-selected. In the "Parameters" section, you can set the format and type of the tag:

  • Secure AdTag: Here you can select whether you want the placement to serve secure (https://) or non-secure (http://).
  • Format: You can choose from the following types: Javascript, iFrame or Image. Javascript is selected by default.
  • Macros: You can add macros to the placement which the publishers system will be able to replace dynamically. You can choose from a list of standard macros, or custom create your macros.

When all settings are correct, click the "Get AdTags" button. The dialog box will refresh to display the tag. You can copy it and send it on to your publisher(s). 

Please note: you are also able to edit or delete placements in the placement overview. However, if you delete a placement, it will be completely removed from the system. If you then try to serve an Impression on this deleted placement, the impression will be blank and Yieldr cannot redirect it.
